A Little Gratitude for AI

People who whine about ChatGPT “not being as good as it used to” have the same energy as people who complain about the wi-fi not working on an airplane, or balk at being on Zoom.

ChatGPT has existed for what, a year?

The fact that you can talk to a machine and get a response that is intelligible and has even a glimmer of coherent thought is pure magic.

Large Language Model AIs are changing the world. They’re accelerating human development.

Yes, there are valid criticisms to level at OpenAI. Not debating that.

But come on.

This stuff is magic. And with time LLM AI will only get better.

Same with airplane wi-fi.

You can send your fake success selfies while cruising at 35,000 feet.

“Oh the airplane wifi sucks, it’s so slow.”

Oh goodness me, dear. It takes a few seconds longer for you to access the entirety of human knowledge and development? To know anything about anything from the comfort of your chair without ever opening a book?

While in the air?

While you’re travelling at speeds our ancestors only thought Gods could move at?

Same with Zoom calls.

“Ugh, I hate sitting on Zoom all day. It’s so hard.”

How horrible. You can talk to someone else in real-time, see them, and have a conversation at zero cost instead of swinging a sledgehammer at some pavement when it’s -20 outside, destroying your body in the process.

Back in the 1990’s, a good long distance rate was $0.15 per minute.

$0.15. Per. Minute.

Now you pay $26 a month and can host meetings that are 24 hours long.

Let’s have a little gratitude for these magical tools we take for granted, yeah?
